Force Multiplier for American Innovation

The Federal Mashup Lab explores the intersection of venture capital, industry, the federal government, and entrepreneurship. We focus on how entrepreneurs can license unique federal technologies and build upon them with their own innovations through pro bono intellectual property services. Additionally, we examine how innovators can position themselves to secure state and federal funding using a de-risking methodology that enhances their appeal to venture capital investors. The Lab also highlights opportunities for collaboration with federal agencies, ways to maximize R&D spending to overcome financial challenges, and strategies for positioning businesses for acquisition, ultimately creating generational wealth.

Federal Collaborators

Collaborating with Federal Laboratory Consortium For Technology Transfer offices (FLC) to identify federal labs and technologies suitable for federal commercialization boot camps within local communities, partnering with industry and considering regional business advantages.

Participants in the 16-week Lean Federal Commercialization Boot Camp will work with matched federal IP and experienced coaches to meet commercialization requirements.

Case Study: NASA

The Federal Mashup Up Lab Powered by Brown Venture Group is a first of its kind co-created model designed specifically to increase participation of contributors within the federal T2 commercialization process. Expert lectures from federal collaborators (such as the US Department of Commerce for International Trade, USPTO, SBA, and MBDA.) and private sector professionals enhanced participants' readiness for funding and business scaling, positioning them to launch and grow their business. In the inaugural cohort, four out of the five teams have indicated that they intend to begin the process of formally applying for a research license from NASA.

  • As a result of the technology pull strategy, the four NASA technology spin-outs in progress have been positioned for consideration by Bank of America's Breakthrough Lab Accelerator,  Medtronic's Supplier Diversity initiative, and friends and family rounds of investment by regional and national venture capital firms.

  • Minnesota Medtech 3.0 Consortium, which includes Mayo Clinic, Medtronic, Boston Scientific, HealthPartners, Medica, MedicalAlley, Minnesota State Colleges, MNTech, and others, have agreed to be a part of the next federal Mashup Lab with NASA and potentially NIH, and DHA. Lab Industry technology pulls strategy.

  • On May 22, 2024, the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Hub Consortium, which Includes Delta Airlines, Bank of America, Ecolab, Cargill, and XCEL Energy, provided the Department of Energy with updates on their progress. As a result of our co-created Inclusive federal technology commercialization pull strategy, the SAF hub would like to explore creating a SAF Mashup Lab with NASA, DOE, and the Department of Agriculture.
